Brutally Honest Constructive Criticism On Slam

Next workshop - Monday December 15th.

We truly believe in diversity on our Slam stages.

We want poets of every age, race, sex, orientation - you name it.

BUT - one thing we also want - is quality.

Therefore, we created BHCCOS. A beginner thru intermediate Slam poetry workshop.

This is a workshop for SLAM POETRY: performance, writing, strategy, preparation, etc...

Slam is NOT a vehicle for the critique of quality literary writing and performance.

Slam is a competition, a game, a sport, and a show. BHCCOS is meant to help you do well in Slam, so we will workshop based on THAT premise.

Your humble Soap Boxing host, coach and SlamMaster (Matthew Rucker) will be running the workshops, with occasional help by National Slam Team members (who say they will be the Paula and Randy to my Simon)

This is a hands on workshop - not a class.

That means you will get up and perform a poem.

We will then work on every element of that poem by breaking it down into components and discussing them.

This, in turn, will help everyone by learning from each others' mistakes. Especially since most rookie Slam poets make many of the same kind of mistakes and/or assumptions.

You don't have to get workshopped if you don't want.

You are welcome to just come and watch, and learn from afar,

but I assure you that you will be much better helped by participating.

If you are too nervous, or scared, well... then you're not ready for a Slam stage anyway.

I am brutally honest, but not mean. You won't run home in tears, probably. You will, however, leave with more confidence in your work, and hopefully - yourself.

Who what where when why how which..

BHCCOS will be held every 3rd Monday

from 6 to 8 pm

at the Black Dog Cafe and Wine Bar

http://www.blackdogstpaul.com

308 Prince Street St. Paul, MN 55101

(In the Northern Warehouse building, next to the St. Paul Farmer's Market)

They have specials on food, coffee and wine, so please help us support them.

After the workshop, we'll be going over to the Artists' Quarter for the Monday night open mic.

This will give you the opportunity to immediately put what you just worked on in front of a live audience.

(This is not mandatory by any means - just a bonus)
